The Kenya Association of Technical Training Institutions (KATTI), in collaboration with the Kenyan Ministry of Education hosted its first East African Regional Conference on TVET under the theme “The Role of TVET in the Development Agenda of Africa”. The event took place from August 25th – 30th, 2013 at the Sai Rock Hotel in Mombasa, Kenya. Looking at technical and vocational education and training as a main driver of development in Africa, the conference addressed the issues and priorities surrounding skills-based training across East Africa.

The Kenya Association of Technical Training Institutions (KATTI) is the body that co-ordinates the activities of technical training institutions across the country. The Association provides a common forum for identifying common interests to the institutions and helps to determine strategies for addressing issues to help improve Technical Education and Training in Kenya.

KIITEC’s Principal, Onesmo Matei was invited to give the Keynote address and shared with the audience the ways FTE and KIITEC are improving sustainable livelihoods through technical education. By focusing on the tools and skills supported at KIITEC, Mr. Matei shared the hands-on and student-centred approach that encourages development and maintenance of technologies and job creation.

The keynote address was followed by a very positive response with inquisitive participants welcoming and encouraging the demonstrated FTE Education model in Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda. Our hope is that this conference and the relationships built here will help lead to the continued collaborative expansion throughout the region.
